Volkwagen is to launch a seven-speed version of the DSG twin-clutch gearbox in the Golf hatch. Compared with the six-speed manual gearbox, carbon dioxide emissions drop 10g/km to just 139g/km. Fuel economy on the combined cycle improves by 3.1mpg, to 47.9mpg. Like the six-speed version, which will continue to be sold, the seven-speed DSG uses two clutches, in effect creating two gearboxes in one. This means the next gear is already selected, waiting for the clutch to engage, leading to quick and smooth gearchanges. The driver can change gear or the gearbox can be left to its own devices, much like a conventional automatic. Prices for the 1.4-litre TSI 5dr with seven-speed DSG will start from £15,982, a premium of £1330 over the manual. Source: WhatCar? |
